2. A "Solar PV" systems, properly known as 'solar photovoltaic systems' but more commonly known as 'solar panels,' require both a building permit and an electrical permit. Plan review of these systems looks at the structural components as well as flow of electricity. Therefore, structural plans should be submitted with a General Building Permit Application, and the electric plans with an Electrical Permit Application. Because the State of Colorado has special rules on Solar PV permitting, we ask that you submit both the structural and electrical plans at the same time, alongside both permit applications and a completed plan submittal requirement checklist.  If you have questions on this requirement, please call the Community Development Department at 303-783-2721.

4. Applying Online

   To apply for this type of permit, you will need to provide the following items:

   1. Completed General Permit Application
   2. Completed Electrical Permit Application
   3. Stamped structural plans (including load path elements and means of attachment if on roof)
   4. Stamped engineer's letter evidencing support of added system loads, if installed on an existing structure
   5. Architectural plans, as applicable
   6. Other necessary plans or specifications to demonstrate Building Code compliance, as applicable
   7. Site plan showing location of system
   8. Elevation drawings are required for roof mounted systems (overall height calculation required if located above highest point of roof ridge)
   9. Construction staging plan
   10. One-line diagram and electrical specifications & calculations as identified on the Plan Submittal Requirement Checklist
   11. Manufacturer's cut sheets and listing information for PV equipment
   12. Copy of application for Xcel Energy's Solar Rewards Contract (signed and approved contract required upon project completion)
   13. Completed Plan Submittal Requirement Checklist (which provides more detail on the items listed above)

   A plan review fee of $340 is required for all Solar PV projects. Payment is accepted via Xpress Bill Pay. Once your payment has been processed, enter your name and the Transaction Number of your payment in the fields below.
